I have never imagined that I would need to get anti-rabies vaccine and boosters one day.
Last Saturday, I was playing with our pet cat when suddenly she got pissed and bit me on my left hand. I immediately washed my bitten hand with running water and soap. I let it bleed because that is what people say when you are bitten by an animal. They say it would let the bacteria out, though I was not really sure about it. I even put on crushed garlic on my wound.
Two hours later, I went to the FEU-NRMF ER with my fiance to have my wound checked, just to be safe. The doctor cleaned my wound and a few minutes later I was given some injections: Anti-rabies vaccine (Verorab) and Tetanus Toxoid. I was also tested for skin allergy for 30 minutes before they gave me the Anti-Tetanus vaccine.
So here how it goes, in case anyone is bitten by an animal. When one is bitten by an animal, whether it is vaccinated or not, wash the wound immediately with soap and water, and go to the nearest ER or Animal Bite Center. The doctor or medical staff will determine what type your exposure is. In my case, it is Category II.
If you are under Category II, you will be given three injections. In my case, I was given Anti-Rabies Vaccine, Tetanus Toxoid and Anti-Tetanus Vaccine. The other three Anti-Rabies shots I will take on the schedules to be given. You will be provided with a copy of your Vaccination Record which you need to bring every time you visit the Animal Bite Center for the remaining shots of Anti-Rabies vaccine.
In case you want to find cheaper Anti-Rabies vaccines elsewhere for your remaining shots, take note that you need to take the same brand of vaccine given to you on Day 0. Since I was given Verorab on Day 0, I will have to take the same brand, Verorab, for Days 3, 7 and 14. Also there are two types of this vaccine: Intramuscular regimen and Intradermal regimen. Since I was given Intramuscular regimen on Day 0, I will need to take the rest of the shots as the same.
Also as per the nurse’s advice, in case I get bitten again by any animal, I will need to take just three Anti-Rabies boosters since I have already taken the vaccine. But of course, I would avoid getting bitten so I would not have to spend so much. Yes, these vaccines are costly. Though there are cheaper options in San Lazaro or in Quezon City Hall.
Here’s a list of rates for the Anti-Rabies vaccine based on the hospitals and clinics I have inquired to:
